Here is an understatement: 2020, 2021 and 2022 were tough.
In fact, I wiled away the hours of the global pandemic completing a Masters degree and commencing a PhD – both focused on group singing. My most recent research explored the impact of ‘not singing’ on people who had made group singing part of their weekly routine pre Covid-19.
Surprise, surprise – people missed social connections, connection with themselves (that alone/together time we spent singing and working out our feelings), a sense of purpose and identity and a weekly high. Guess what else people missed? The songs, the harmony, the co-creation. Of course.
So, in 2023 I am driven to Re-Wild. Rewilding is an environmental concept related to restoring and protecting natural processes. I like to think of that on a personal level as getting in touch with how I feel, think and act in the world. This includes singing which is infused with beloved processes – like listening, thinking/not thinking, creating, connecting, changing, growing, moving.
The Rewilding Project will evolve. It will involve special songs, some adventures and step one – an intention of reconnecting with the singing we love so much.
Stay tuned.
